Lighter and more powerful than before, the redesigned Evora 400 is also faster and more sophisticated than any other Lotus in history, claim its creators. It’s been around for six years – this is not so much a face-lift as a reincarnation. Lotus says more than two-thirds of the parts are new. The Evora looks much the same from dead abeam, but the nose and tail are comprehensively new, and the cabin too. So is much of what’s underneath.
400 horses from a Toyota 3.5-litre V6 engine, which Lotus transmogrifies with its own supercharging, charge-cooling, intakes, exhaust and management. It’s an ever-alert beating heart to the car. At the front there are much bigger grilles designed into the nose, there not just to give the car a more thrusting appearance but also to allow more air into the redesigned inter-cooling system. At the rear there’s also a new diffuser that looks great but also helps to generate a touch more downforce than before.
Weighing in at 1395kg with fuel on board, 400 weights less than the old Evora S, despite the newfound power, and the extra cooling and braking hardware that came along with it. Lotus claims 4.2 seconds for 0-62, and a top speed of 186mph.
Also re-engineered is the ESP system, which now features four different driving modes; Drive, Sport, Race and Off. In Drive the exhaust note remains dormant until you pin the throttle hard and enter the second half of the rev range, but in Sport the exhaust wakes up and sounds magnificent far sooner, while in Race it becomes twice as loud even at idle, and makes a noise not unlike a full-blown racing car at anything approaching full throttle.
Lotus has revised the extruded and bonded aluminum tub, lowering the sills by 56mm and reducing their width by 43mm in order to make getting in and out of the car easier without affecting the 27,000Nm/deg torsional rigidity. There’s a touch more space in the footwell too, while the cabin has been revised to make it not just easier to use but also more attractive to look at.
The Evora benefits from more power, a cut in weight, a sharp new look and a chassis with greater focus and agility.
