LIVE THE EXPERIENCE:
Many vehicles of today claim to be able to do it all. The idea of cramming every possible avenue of automotive technology into a vehicle seems to be the current trend of today’s manufacturers. The balance between performance, off-road ability, and comfort always seems to end in something that resembles a dull swiss army knife with a lumpy handle. But what if there was a tool that has stayed sharp, even after all these years use and abuse? A tool that has engraved itself into the golden sheen that is the sport utility vehicles’ very existence? Welcome to the 2016 Range Rover Full Size.
Starting with Performance, you might take one look at this sleek aluminum West Vancouver runabout and think, “That thing probably has a diesel”. But oh, how wrong you would be. Under the hood of this posh soccer wagon beats a Supercharged 5 Liter direct injection V8 that sends 510 Hp and 461 Ft lbs of torque to all four wheels via a sophisticated full time all wheel drive system. 4.7 seconds is all the time it takes for this living room on wheels to accelerate to 60 mph, and the local Starbucks will fly by your window in 13.1 seconds at 106 mph so long as it is at the end of your local quarter mile drag strip.
So here you are, sitting up high, arm rested on the door sill, accelerating like a cannonball being fired from an 18th Century Frigate, and the thought comes to mind: What if a corner was to be put in front of me? For that we turn to the fully aluminum unibody. With 700 pounds cut out from the previous generation of Range Rover, combined with an air suspension system that automatically adjusts when going through a corner via gyro meters, you can be rest assured that you will be able to handle the squigglier bit of tarmac.
However, when the tarmac ends, your journey doesn’t have to. With an Automatic Terrain Response system, all that is needed from you is to air down your tires a tad, and let the truck do the rest. Whether it be sand, mud, grass, gravel, snow or big chunky rocks, this system will detect vehicle angle, wheel position, suspension position and which tires have the most traction to automatically adjust everything for maximum attack, no matter the surface. The air suspension that was keeping you planted as you booted it through the corners, now has the truck raised with 11.63 inches of ground clearance, allowing the earth to pass freely beneath you.
“Oh no!” you say as you approach a water crossing, but “Heck yeah!” says the Range Rover with its wading depth of 35.4 inches. As water is splashing the top of your hood, you start to realize that this may be the vehicle that has all stops covered. A Swiss Army knife that truly has never dulled, but perhaps has gotten even sharper over the years.
What is thought of lastly is the minimalistic elegance of the interior that greeted you upon your first arrival. Rich Oxford leather, heated front and rear seats, massage and cooling front seats, a heated steering wheel, Multicolor Ambient lighting, a cooling box for your choice beverages, surround camera parking assist, power rear seats, a panoramic sunroof, and Meridian Audio to top it all off. It might seem like this much tech crammed into one interior would clutter and confuse those lucky enough to get behind the wheel, yet somehow, the opposite occurs. The systems do not shout “Look at me” but rather lay in wait behind an opulent curtain waiting their master’s selection.
Combined with the same air suspension that allowed you to corner carve and mountain climb, that is now soaking up every bump and jitter like Vince from the Sham-wow! commercial; the realization is complete. Many vehicles of today speak loudly about how good they are at doing everything. But it is only one that speaks this softly, yet carries the biggest stick of them all.
