Brute force has been an instinctual reaction to many problems since the dawn of time. From bashing open tree nuts to clobbering other tribes to death, our primeval response is often one of savagery. This holds true all the way to present day cars, with performance manufacturers inching ahead of one another’s horsepower and torque figures with each passing year. But there is only one company that, from the very beginning, took the feral behaviors of our past, and used them to inspire the cars that they would produce for the rest of time. That company is Mercedes Benz, and from AMG, this is the 2014 CLS63.
With a 577 HP 5.5 liter Twin Turbocharged V8, this sleek 4 door coupe will throw you back and shoot to 60 mph in 3.2 seconds. That’s 0.1 of a second quicker than a Ferrari Enzo. Thanks to launching control, a Tsunami of power, Wet Clutch pack, and full time All Wheel Drive, the quarter mile scoots by in 11.6 seconds, fast enough to embarrass purpose-built racecars at the local drag strip. But do not fear, this symphony of apparent violence is masked in the serenity you would expect of a Mercedes Benz. With heated and cooled seats, driver’s message function, power rear sunshade and an almost silent interior, you can enjoy the rest of the magic the CLS has on offer.
Throw it into the squiggliest of roads, and again, brute force is all that the CLS knows; essentially this car is the vehicular variant of He-Man. Power through, and out of corners, as the heavily bolstered leather seats hold you firmly in place, while the adaptive suspension keeps all 4 tires in contact with the pavement. This is a thrill ride a minute – agile in a sense, but what it lacks in handling finesse it overcomes with sheer confidence.
Those of us that can laugh at life’s absurdities, and grasp them as they come, are truly the ones that will carry the flame of human greatness, always remembering how far we have come. The CLS embodies who we once were, and with the push of a pedal, reminds us how much damage a hammer can do.
