LIVE THE EXPERIENCE:
There once was a time where everyone’s favorite German rear-engined pendulum on wheels did not have a bigger brother. The 911 was, and remains, an iconic sports car to this day. Then, back in 2003, a new model was announced, and quickly became Porsche’s best seller: the Cayenne was born.
Fast forward to 2011 and the second iteration of that bigger brother, albeit, a slimmer and more muscular version of itself hit the streets to mass applause.
This 2012 Cayenne S, some 400 lbs trimmer than its previous-self, also sports a 1.6 inch longer wheelbase, allowing it to maneuver even better than its predecessor, an SUV that already belied its massive weight, and proved that it’s Porsche DNA was strong. This is truly a driver’s SUV, yet the new Cayenne is deceptively large. On the outside, its trimmer appearance makes it look much smaller than the previous version. Parked next to a Toyota RAV4 of the same era, the Cayenne looks about the same size. It is, however, not only bigger than the RAV4 but also larger in almost every measure than the original Cayenne.
The performance numbers don’t stop at reduced weight: a 4.8-liter, direct injection 32-valve V-8 delivers 400 horses at 6500 rpm and 369 lbs-ft torque, mated to an eight-speed transmission resulting in quick, seamless shifts both on and off-road. The Cayenne S further delivers jaw-dropping power on the rare occasion you may find yourself hurling this family mover around your local track. Towing capacity, at a massive 7716 lbs, doesn’t skimp.
The interior, now a Porsche stable across the model range, leaves everything at close range to the driver’s reach. The touchscreen Porsche Communication Management system is intuitive and easy to use. Gauges are where they should be, easy to read, and communicate everything in an easy to understand glance, allowing the driver to concentrate on the upcoming chicane. Brakes respond like only a Porsche can, and steering is incredibly light, communicative, and direct.
Proof that sometimes bigger is indeed almost as good, the Porsche Cayenne doesn’t disappoint. When life dictates that you have a few more responsibilities than whimsy and a weekend bag allow, the cayenne won’t feel like a compromise, but rather a logical extension of the 911’s bloodline.
