LIVE THE EXPERIENCE:
The recipe for a muscle car has, historically, always been a simple one: take a regular old coupe, and add an eyeball thumping V8 with enough torque to reverse the magnetic rotation of Jupiter.
This steak and potatoes approach to a performance vehicle, done mostly by the Americans, created a vehicle that thrilled in the straights but left much to be desired when a corner approached. For decades, this is all the global automotive community knew a muscle car to be. Then one day, overnight, everything changed. It seemed that the industrious nation of Germany wanted to have their own go at making such a car, and with that, the Mercedes C63 AMG was born.
The sleepy little village of Affalterbach created the 2-door brute before you today. Within the flared wheel arches that only a car enthusiast would recognize, beats a 6.3 Litre heart of pure chaos. Stomp on the right pedal, and hold on as 451 HP and 443 ft-lbs of torque propels you to 60 mph in 3.8 seconds continuing to a limited top speed of 155 mph. Bring it to the drag strip, and it’ll throw down a 12.1-second quarter mile at 115 mph. 440 Six Pack Challenger: eat your heart out.
So it seems that straight line grunt is taken care of, and with 6 piston brakes, 60 mph to zero in 102 feet can be deployed for when that Prius pulls in front of you from the shoulder without looking. What about when you enter a corner? You might think that there is a bunch of electronic trickery lurking beneath with some adaptive dampening, torque vectoring witchcraft keeping everything on the road, but no. What it does have is quick ratio steering, coil springs, gas pressured struts, and anti-roll bars. That allows the C63 to pull 0.95 G on the skidpad. A Nissan GTR pulls 1.0 G. That’s right, this muscle car has almost as much lateral acceleration as Godzilla.
Throw in a leather interior, heated seats, and seats with bolsters that hug you like a lonely prison inmate for good measure. So there you have it, the nation of Germany does occasionally laugh. The question is, do you?
