When looking at objects of history, some seem to never age. It’s as if from birth, time had forgotten to take a toll on these fortunate items. Whether it be the Roman Buttress, or a pair of jeans and a white T-shirt, some things keep their youth far beyond the lives of their creators. They find their way into the hustle of present-day life and show no signs of extinguishing in the future.
This phenomenon rarely occurs in the automotive world, yet occasionally a car so striking is designed, that it leaves its mark for many years to come. This is such a car: the 2008 Aston Martin Vantage Convertible.
From front to back, the design language speaks a sexualized minimalism; sleek lines flow into feminine curves and swoops, while others end up in muscular arches creating a striking masculine stance.
It’s as if Michelangelo was teleported from the High Renaissance, and then applied for a job at Aston Martin: one day when he was done sweeping the floors, he stumbled upon a clay block sitting idle and couldn’t help himself. Though this would make for a good novel plot, the true designer, Henrik Fisker, held the pen that would guide Aston Martin’s design language from way back in 2005.
With that fabulous body comes a sound that is as sugary as whispers of sweet nothings from a longing lover. Plant your foot to the floor, and the 4.3 Litre V8 turns ordinary 94 octane gasoline into a sound similar to that of a Vickers Light Machine Gun. With 380 Horsepower and 302 ft-lbs of torque at your disposal, you may feel as though you are behind the trigger of something just as powerful. Thanks to the automated single clutch transmission mated to a carbon fiber driveshaft and limited slip differential, 0-60 comes up in 4.2 seconds, the quarter mile in 13.8 seconds, and if you’re feeling risky, a top speed of 175 Mph can be deployed just in case you find Oddjob and Jaws in pursuit.
As we age, so too does the world around us. It’s an inevitable fact that shows through the clothes we wear, our belongings, the structures we build, and the ideas that are formed for the future. Not something to be ashamed of or fear, but something to embrace and learn from, as these items and decisions all play a part in who we are.
But there are some things that will, for a very long time, look fresh as the day they first came to life. One of those things is an Aston Martin. Let the Vantage be your Fountain of Youth.
