Very few cars offer an experience that is truly one of a kind. Some have the engines in the rear, some have telepathic steering, others make you feel like a kid again, while some seemingly have all the power in the world. But are any of these genuinely thrilling?
There is only one car, that will drive unfiltered fear into the heart of whoever dares to pilot it. That car is the AC Cobra. Originally conceived in 1961 by Carroll Shelby, who requested AC to fit an 8 cylinder engine into his Ace, Shelby went to Chevrolet to source an engine, but was told “no,” as Chevrolet did not want a Corvette competitor. He then went to Ford, and found them happy to supply him with their new Windsor 221 cubic inch V8. AC fitted it in, and the models that followed gained increases in displacement and horsepower until the mighty 427 Cobra was born.
The original, with 485 HP in competition trim, was able to hit 0-60 in 4.0 seconds and a top speed of 185 Mph. This re-creation before you today does not have 485 HP; It has 580 HP.
Its 480 cubic inch fuel injected engine, built to exacting specifications and dyno’d at the rear wheels at 580 horsepower by Gromm Racing in San Jose California makes this the perfect rocket if you live in an area with a lot of hills, or if you find that your life is not exciting enough, even after 16 cups of coffee.
Combine this 8 cylinder nuclear bomb to a full tubular framed chassis, rack and pinion steering, 4 piston disc brakes, 9″ Currie rear end and a Tremec 5 speed transmission, and you have the “recipe to fear” that Shelby originally concocted.
So what are you waiting for? Slide on in, hook together the 5 point belts, and hold on for dear life. A thundering blue streak will be all that other motorists see as you finally realize, that this is truly the car to end all cars – a force to be reckoned with. It will take you back to the glory days of muscle cars of the 1960s. But beware: this is a car that requires concentration and a skilled pilot, lest you end up in a horrific fireball of American glory and patriotism. This Cobra is ready, are you?
