RACING

Last year we decided as a company to re-enter some type of competitive motorsport. Not having a lot of spare shoptime, we wanted a car which was very reliable, and would race an entire season with minimal repairs. We chose a 1988 Carrera coupe as the basis for our project, modifying it to Clubsport specifications. Keeping the car street driveable avoided the cost of tow vehicles and trailers, and let us devote our racing budget to travel and the car itself.

Our primary campaign for 2000 was the CACC B.C. regional championship in A/Street Prepared, a series of 8 solo events. We also set our sights on the Porsche Club autocross at Whistler where we would have to run the car in GTO because of the 17" wheels. Our secondary campaign was to run the two hillclimbs, available Solo 1 events, Porsche Club autocrosses and of course our own track days. All in all our schedule would take us to 19 events in Vancouver, Whistler, Vernon, Victoria and Seattle.

We determined that car and driver development would be equally important, as none of us had very much previous experience in Solo events or hillclimbs. It was decided that I would be the primary driver for championship points, and Stuart would run the Solo 1 events and hillcimbs with me.

The car was developed as follows:

"Whistler Weekend"
For 2001, we've decided to go Endurance racing. What attracts us to endurance racing is the team spirit of the sport. It is also a great proving ground for new products and new ideas. In order to campaign in 'Improved Production' we have to remove our lightweight bumpers, lexan windows and lightweight battery. Other than that the car fits well into the IP1 category. We will also be sponsoring an evening Autocross series with the Porsche club, competing at the Whistler Weekend and hosting two track days at Seattle International Raceway.

Car changes for 2001
  • 'Big Reds' front & rear brakes from the 993 twin turbo
  • Modification of the fuel filler for quick fill
  • Installation of an additional door bar and roll bar mounted net
  • Tire choice is still in the air
